IRS seeks those owed tax refunds |
|
Hoosier taxpayers are due to receive some $1.3 million in refunds that were returned to the Internal Revenue Service due to mailing address errors. The IRS said 1,377 taxpayers are missing their refunds. The undelivered refund checks average $913, up from an average of $797 last year. Changes in tax laws and programs such as the first-time home buyer's credit and recovery rebate credit likely increased the amounts. Some taxpayers are due more than one refund check. Business Weekly has obtained a list of the taxpayers owed refunds in the 16 counties it covers: Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Elkhart, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley counties in Indiana and Defiance, Paulding, Van Wert and Williams counties in Ohio. Taxpayers whose names appear on the list of those owed refunds can update their addresses by using the "Where's my refund?" tool at irs.gov. A taxpayer must submit his or her social security number, filing status and amount of refund on the 2008 return. The tool will provide the status of the refund and, if needed, instructions on how to resolve delivery problems. Taxpayers checking on a refund over the phone will be given instructions on how to update their addresses. Taxpayers can access a telephone version of "Where's my refund?" by calling (800) 829-1954.
