Indiana egg farmers are giving the Easter Bunny something to hop about as Midwest Poultry and Bern-Hi Way Hatchery prepare to donate more than 440,000 eggs to the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana, Inc. on Tuesday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. Approximately 21,200 different people receive emergency food assistance for the food bank any given week and 45 percent of that amount is children under 18.
“Helping neighboring families in need is of the utmost importance to our industry,” said Bob Krouse, President of Midwest Poultry.
For the third year in a row, United Egg Producers and Feeding America are teaming up in the fight against hunger and local egg farmers across America are dropping off truckloads of much needed protein to local food banks just in time for Easter. The partnership here in Indiana and throughout the nation will help feed the nearly 49 million men, women and children in America who are at risk of hunger.
“We’re proud to offer our help and support when our community needs it now more than ever,” said Bob Bixler, President of Berne-Hi Way Hatchery.
“Community Harvest salutes America’s egg farmers for joining together and helping to address the critical hunger crisis in America,” said Jane Avery, the Executive Director at Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana. “More and more Hoosiers, many of whom have never turned to a food bank before, are seeking assistance and we truly appreciate a donation of this magnitude.”
In coordination with Feeding America – the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity, egg farmers nationwide will be donating more than 11 million eggs to help make sure America’s food banks are well stocked with nutrient-dense eggs.
“United Egg Producers’ members are dedicated to helping their local communities,” said Gene Gregory, president of United Egg Producers. “Our hope is that this donation during the Easter holiday makes a significant difference in the lives of many people who live at risk of hunger.”
