Dr. Michael Burlingame, holder of the Chancellor Naomi B. Lynn Distinguished Chair in Lincoln Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield, will be the annual keynote speaker at the 2010 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture. This year’s lecture will be held in the Lower Level Theater of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza, on Monday March 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Burlingame has a Ph.D. in History from Princeton University and taught in the History Department at Connecticut College in New London for 33 years. He joined the faculty of the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2009. He has extensively studied and taught Civil War History. Professor Burlingame is perhaps best known as a scholar of President Abraham Lincoln, and he has written and edited many books about the 16th President and about the Civil War.
Dr. Burlingame is the author of Abraham Lincoln: A Life (2008), and the Inner World of Abraham Lincoln (1994). In addition, he has edited several volumes of Lincoln primary source materials, and he continues to work on several Lincoln related projects. Dr. Burlingame resides in Springfield, Illinois and has received the Abraham Lincoln Association Book Prize (1996), the Lincoln Diploma of Honor from the Lincoln Memorial University (1998), Honorable Mention for the Lincoln Prize, Gettysburg College (2001), and the 2010 winner of the Lincoln Prize for his book, Abraham Lincoln: A Life. He was inducted into the Lincoln Academy of Illinois in 2009.
Professor Burlingame will attend a brown bag (bring your own) lunch at the Allen County Public Library on March 15 at 11:30. Media is invited to attend. Following lunch, he will be given a tour and briefing of the library’s digitization process. He will also attend other events that afternoon and a dinner with supporters and board members of the Lincoln Collection and Lincoln Museum. He will then present the McMurtry Lecture at 7:30 PM in the Theater.
The annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture is presented by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Allen County Public Library. This year’s sponsors are Ian and Mimi Rolland. Admission into the lecture is free, and a post lecture reception will be held at the library.
