I have to admit, I was a little bit nervous about Adam Lambert's upcoming album after hearing "Time for Miracles," his meh single for the movie "2012." (You can read my opinions here and here.) But now, I'm not concerned, because I just saw the cover art for his new album (at right, or you can see it here.)
Whew, I'm loving pretty much everything about this 70s glam-rock/80s camp/disco mish-mash: the blue feathery hair, the black and yellow guyliner, the spacey background, the silly fonts. Lambert rocks whole androgynous shirtless rocker look. It screams fun. It shows that Lambert's not afraid to be different. It's great! It will stand out in a store.
Poking around the web, fan reactions seem to be a bit negative. Some object to the fact that he looks a little bit feminine, although he definitely always walked that line on "American Idol." Others think it's too over the top and campy, to which Lambert responded on his Twitter feed: "Thank you to those who appreciate and understand that the album cover is deliberately campy. It's an omage to the past. It IS ridiculous" and "For those that don't get it: oh well... Glad to have gotten your attention."
The backlash also confirms my suspicion that Adam Lambert may, just may, be a little bit out there for mainstream American audiences. A lot of people won't mind, I'm sure, but I've already seen a lot of comments online from people who are mighty uncomfortable about his perceived gender-bending on this album cover, and I don't even think he's wearing lipstick! Well, not much, anyway. My hope is that people are able to accept Lambert's out-there stylings and enjoy his music for what it is, but only time will tell.
What do you think of Glambert's new album cover? Campy and awesome, or over-the-top and creepy? Sound off!
