In June 2008 the Indiana State Library announced receipt of a $1 million grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services for recruiting and educating 30 ethnically/racially diverse students for Indiana’s Librarians Leading In Diversity Project, over a three year period. The first class of 10 students began classes January 12 at the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science with seven students at the Indianapolis campus and three students in Bloomington. One of the 10 individuals awarded this full tuition and living stipend Fellowship is Fort Wayne resident Kirsten Weaver. Kirsten is
an employee of the Allen County Public Library who is now on educational leave.
“We’re pleased to have one of our employees be a part of this program. Libraries in Indiana and across the country have too few librarians reflecting the diverse populations that they serve—including here in Fort Wayne. This is one way the State Library is working to change this,” said ACPL Director, Jeff Krull.
Ten additional individuals will be selected for this Master of Library Science (MLS) Degree Fellowship program and will start classes in September of 2009. Applications are due April 24.
