An owner of Biomet plans to implement its efficiency and waste-reduction improvement plans at the orthopedics manufacturer based in Warsaw.
Private-equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and the Environmental Defense Fund collaborated to develop tools to analyze and help companies improve their environmental performance. KKR already has seen more than $16 million in savings as the EDF plan was introduced at some of its other portfolio companies last year. It helped reduce water and chemical use, waste and greenhouse gas emissions, according to a KKR statement.
KKR put a pilot plan in place at U.S. Foodservice Inc., Primedia Inc. and Sealy Corp. Soon it will be implemented at Biomet, as well as Accellent, Dollar General and HCA.
Biomet is based in Warsaw.
Parkview Huntington has new equipment
A new scanner that can help doctors identify the risk of osteoporosis now is available at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
The dexa scanner can determine the density of the spine, hip and other bones where osteoporosis can increase the risk of fractures. It also allows physicians to follow patients’ bone density over time and help those at risk avoid the disease, according to a Parkview Huntington statement.
The scanner is part of the Parkview Huntington diagnostic services department.
Parkview Huntington also has purchased a plethysmograph, which is used to measure lung capacity. Physicians can use the results to find airway-passage restrictions and other diseases, Parkview Huntington said in a statement.
The machine includes a chamber the size of a phone booth with a mouthpiece. The patient is placed inside and asked to exhale and then inhale. The pressure changes in the booth, created by the patient’s breathing, are measured by the equipment.
Both machines are available at Parkview LaGrange, Noble and Whitley hospitals.
