Dozens of Indianapolis football fans sent in their photos for KPC’s online football fan photo contest, and hundreds votes for their favorite. With the Super Bowl taking place later today, that contest has come to an end, but there are more opportunities on KPC Media Group’s Web sites for those seeking fun and prizes.
The nominations for the Academy Awards were announced Tuesday, and once again KPC Media Group is holding an Oscar picks contest. This year the prize is a year’s worth of movie tickets from Regal Entertainment Group. If you’re not sure about some of the top picks, be sure to catch KPC movie critic Jenny Kobiela-Mondor’s annual Oscar prediction column in the Sunday Life section on Feb. 21, then go to fwdailynews.com/special/oscars to try your hand at Academy Award prognostication.
If you would rather shoot still photos than watch moving pictures, try KPC’s monthly photo contest at kpcnews.net/photocontest. Two winning photos — one picked by KPC professionals, the other voted “People’s Choice” by online readers — receive the choice of their photo on a mug or mousepad each month, with the chance to win one of the grand prizes at the end of the year. For more information, or to vote for your favorite photo, visit kpcnews.net/photocontest.
Welcome to the race, Mr. Coats
The midweek news that former Sen. Dan Coats was planning to enter the race for the seat currently held by Sen. Evan Bayh drew several comments and predictions from members of The Fence Post, KPC Media Group’s online forum. HomeyG commented:
“Dan Coats will be a formidable candidate. [Being] a Republican running in a red state will certainly help him. Bayh will be hurt by voting for the health care bill and if the economy and the job situation is still in the tank it will definitely hurt him. If not, it will help immensely. Coats being a lobbyist will have little affect on his candidacy and his prior experience as a Senator will help him.”
HoosierHelen replied, “I agree Coats will be a formidable candidate. Bayh voting for the health care bill is a plus for him within my value system. Will the people hold Bayh responsible for the economy? I’m not sure. I hold the Republicans responsible for getting us in this mess, I’m looking to the Democrats to pull us out. Democrats are sure having problems building momentum.”
nathandiehl (Waterloo town councilman Nathan Diehl) predicted, “It will be interesting to see the first polling numbers with Coats and Bayh. Considering Mike Pence had a small 3-point lead on Bayh, I think Coats will have a nearly 10-point lead on Bayh when the first poll comes out.”
Perfect match or imperfect pitch?
The pairing of Stevie Nicks and Taylor Swift at the Grammy Awards drew catcalls from Fence Posters who felt that Swift was off-key. However, pixiegirl came to the country star’s defense, posting:
“I too LOVE Stevie and have been a fan of Nicks/Fleetwood [Mac] since I was old enough to appreciate music. However, let’s not be so quick to jump on young Taylor. I took my daughter to see her in concert last year, and though not a big fan of country, I was very impressed that a girl her age has the vocal range and talent that she does. Let’s also remember that she writes all her own music, not seen too often anymore and especially from someone of her age. I just think she deserves some credit for her talents.”
The Fence Post also saw Hannah Holstein’s Super Bowl prediction; check it out today before the big game to see if the WonderCow will have something to moo about. Other hot topics this past week included Super Bowl recipes, tire chalking and deli food in Auburn, and what to do for Valentine’s Day. Praise for kidney donor
The Monday story of Ligonier resident Lori Schrader donating a kidney to friend Joe Vargas drew praises from online readers who posted online comments on the story. Carla commented:
“What a great story and lesson for all of us. We need to be donors - whether they be living or not it is so important. Lori, that was such a great gift.”
Another reader posted, “Lori Schrader is the epitome of courage and faith. Joe Vargas must be quite a
guy to have so many good friends on his side. Good for both of them!”
